Now, don't freak out.  Catering an event is not that difficult.  It can feel overwhelming, but you can pull it off.  Make sure you know the amount of confirmed guests and the portions you are going to need.  Also, try and be aware of any food allergy people may possess.
It is important to have a variety of options and to make sure that an ample amount of food with continuously be available for the guests.  Depending on the setup of the event you may have servers walking around with appetizers or you could have a buffet like table with an array of munchies.  Either way, the worst feeling is to run out of food with guests who are still hungry and unsatisfied.  So the reality of the situation is it is better to have too much food than too little.
Catering tips for appetizers:

If you're having just an evening function with no dinner, plan on at least 10 – 15 pieces per person. Round up, especially if it's going to be served buffet style, as people tend to eat more than if a tray is passed.
If you're serving pre-dinner appetizers, plan on 3 – 5 pieces per person, and choose lighter food options, as dinner will follow.
If you're having a mid-day function with a meal following, offer 1 – 3 pieces per person.
